Anyone who has ever faced a serious illness, major surgery, or a death in the family knows that the need to be a part of a community is greatest during times of crisis. Schechter has a very active and dedicated Hesed Committee, which enables the Schechter community to provide a web of support during difficult times. Hesed Committee members cook meals, drive to appointments, send cards or gift baskets, and provide emotional support.
The members of the committee do their acts of hesed (good deeds) with a great deal of love, discretion, and energy. They do whatever is feasible to alleviate some of the stress experienced by members of our community in times of need. Many people who have received support from Hesed later reciprocate by providing assistance to others.
The Schechter family understands that Kol Yisrael arayvim zeh bazeh, all of Israel is responsible for one another. By modeling these examples of loving-kindness and thoughtfulness, we teach our children the basics of being a mensch. Our children can bring this kindness along with their secular and Hebrew skills into their adult lives.
