Message from the Head of School

Welcome to the Solomon Schechter Day School! Thank you for taking the opportunity to learn about our wonderful school and its outstanding educational program.

I am honored and excited to be taking on the role of Head of School at Solomon Schechter Day School. Schechter instilled in me a love for Judaism and Israel, an intellectual curiosity, and a deep appreciation for and commitment to community.

On my first official day as Head of School, I visited Mayyim Hayyim, a beautiful mikveh in our community. Given the significant transition in my life and for Schechter, I wanted to mark the day in a meaningful way. As I stood at the first step of the mikveh, I recited:  מי יתן ששנה זו תחל עבורי בהתחדשות ותפתח זרועותיה לאפשרויות ולשינויים (May I begin this year fresh and open to the possibility of transformation). Entering the mikveh helped me prepare for the responsibility I am taking on, both for my own transformation as well as a renewal for our school.

The renewal of Schechter will be a collaborative effort among all of us, working together as a community to create the Schechter of our aspirations. We will together build upon our strengths to create a school that:

  • Fosters an engaging, innovative and rigorous educational program with meaningful intersections between Judaic and secular subjects that prepares students for high school in unparalleled ways
  • Ignites a spark of Judaism and love of Israel in our students, causing them to embrace their Jewish identity and sustaining their curiosity to explore it further after graduation
  • Cultivates a collaborative, joyful, inclusive and responsive community across all of our diverse constituencies and numerous professional and personal interactions
I have such immense confidence in our capacity as a community to strengthen our school in these ways. Thank you for the support and counsel you have offered me thus far. I am humbled by the incredible community we have, all of us eager to help Schechter thrive for the benefit of our children and future generations of Schechter students.

I encourage you to learn more about Schechter, whether through the pages of our website, talking to friends and our current parents.  Even better, come see our school with your own eyes.

L'shalom,

Rebecca Lurie
Head of School

"Everything I wanted for my children I found at Schechter. It’s a real community, a family.
The teachers know my kids and the education is inspiring and rigorous, incremental and age-appropriate." - Schechter parent
