Parent Association Activities – Get Involved!!

In-School Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways to volunteer at Schechter, and catch a glimpse at your child’s school life at the same time! Check out these options:

Pizza Lunch at the Lower School

Our kids love having pizza lunch, and we need parent support to have it run smoothly! Help setup and pizza to our Lower School students every Friday. If you ever wanted to know what your kids are doing during lunch, this is your chance! Please contact Debra Shure (drshure@msn.com) and Sharon Mishkin (marissadelisha@yahoo.com) for more information.

Chinese Lunch at the Upper School

Help setup and serve Chinese lunch at the Upper School once a month. This is a great opportunity to see what your kids are doing during lunch, and have some Chinese lunch for yourself! Please contact Lauren Korn (lmichaelskorn@gmail.com) for more information.

Volunteer in the Library at the Lower School

Parent volunteers help Lori the Librarian restock the shelves and check out books for our younger readers. This is also a great opportunity to take a peek at your kids, while listening our amazing resident storyteller (and librarian). Volunteer at often as you like!  Contact Lori Kahn at lori.kahn@ssdsboston.org for more information.

Social Action with the Schechter PA

Engage in tikkun olam (repairing the world through acts of kindness) with Schecter’s PA and teach your children the importance of caring for others in our community. Volunteer at JC&FS Family Table and provide nutritious meals to families in need. Help us meet our commitment of 45 cans of tuna each month for Family Table. Cans should be left in the collection bins in the lobbies at the Shaller and Shoolman Campuses. Stay tuned for more family-friendly social action activities. Please contact Sylvia Haber (sylhaber@gmail.com), Lisa Gordon (lisa@kdgordon.com) and Miriam Weiss (shainds@gmail.com) for more information.

Hesed Community

The Hesed Community is a group of Schechter families that provides meals, rides and other support to members of the Schechter community in need. Whatever the need, we are there for you. If you would like to be added to the list of volunteers or know of a member of the community in need, please contact Serena Madar and Sylvia Haber at hesed@ssdsboston.org.

Scholastic Book Fairs

Each year, our PA joins with Scholastic Book Fairs to bring books to upper and lower school students, while raising money for the PA. Parent volunteers help with setup, sales, assisting students choose books and cleanup.  For more information, please contact: (Gan Shelanu) Rebekah Roiter (rroiter2@gmail.com) (Lower School) Sarah Paisner (smpaisner@gmail.com) and Shira Ravera (shirar@aol.com), (Upper School) Ilana Edry (iledry@rcn.com).

Teacher Appreciation

One of the PA’s most important jobs is to show our appreciation for our teachers. We provide welcome back baskets, holiday baskets and baskets of goodies for our teachers throughout teacher appreciation week in the teachers’ lounges.  We also host and provide lunch for our annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon at the end of the year. To help us show our appreciation, please contact Jenny Friedberg (jennifer@meltzner.net) and Amanda Schouela (amandaschouela@gmail.com) for more information.

Creative Arts and Sciences Program

In partnership with the Newton Public School's Creative Arts and Sciences Committee, Schechter is able to provide high-quality, educational enrichment programs in art, language arts, poetry, mathematics, music, science, social studies and Judaic studies which are organized through the PA. Schechter's Creative Arts and Sciences Committee selects programs that complement the academic curriculum for grades K through 8 throughout the school year. The programs have included Audubon Ark, Engineers Teaching Algebra, Wingmasters, Art Quest, Night Skies, Bay Colony Educators, the Science Discovery Museum, a political cartoonist, jazz musician, storytellers and numerous authors.  Parent volunteers are needed to help choose and greet our amazing presenters. For more information, please contact Sharon Waller (sharonjwaller@gmail.com) and Alison Judd (alisonjudd@gmail.com).

Outdoor Activity Club

Please join the PA Outdoor Activity Club for a variety of outdoor adventures throughout the year. Enjoy an afternoon outside in nature with other Schechter families while hiking in local woods, kayaking on the Charles River in Newton, or skiing at the Blue Hills Reservation. For more information, please contact Jen and Jason Skolnick (jssquared1995@gmail.com) for more information.
