At Schechter, a connection to Israel is deeply rooted in the curriculum. While living in the United States, Israeli families know that being at Schechter means their children feel tied to family back home, to the Israeli mentality.
Our Hebrew program delivers more than fluency in the language. Hebrew is more than a language. It is a culture. Hebrew teachers are native Israelis who use authentic materials that are aligned with current education standards in Israel. Stories, songs, games all create an environment that builds not just Hebrew language skills, but identity.
We offer ELL (English Language Learner) support to students who begin at Schechter with little to no English language skills. Emerging English learners are given the critical structure and consistent support needed to be able to access academic content and interact in English more quickly. Students meet either individually or in small groups several times each week with our ELL faculty member.
Israeli students benefit overall from being in an environment with classmates, teachers and community members who can converse with them in Hebrew. They generally make steady progress in English comprehension and the acquisition of vocabulary through daily interaction with friends and the constant osmosis of hearing English throughout the school day.
Jewish life at Schechter is holistic and spiritual. It is our philosophy to expose our students to the richness of prayer, holidays and rituals and not impose beliefs. Every student comes to his or her own “ani ma’amin” or “ani ma’amina” (“this I believe”) moment through opportunities to explore and learn in our diverse, inclusive community.
We focus on mastering skills in all subject areas in Jewish and general studies. We prepare students to grapple with complexity and strive to find personal relevance in what they are learning. We develop a mindset in our students that is essential to a happy life of connection and contribution.
In the end, whether you are left, right, Ashkenazi, Sephardi, dati or not dati (religious or not), whether you agree or do not agree, Kol Israel Achim (all of Israel are brothers/family). Being at Schechter means being part of our family and people.

בשכטר החיבור לישראל נטוע עמוק בתכנית הלימודים. בעודן מתגוררות בארצות הברית, משפחות ישראליות יודעות שלהיות חלק ממשפחת שכטר, פירושו שילדיהן ירגישו קשורים למשפחה בבית ולמנטליות הישראלית.
אנו מציעים תמיכת ELL (לומדי השפה האנגלית) לתלמידים אשר מתחילים בשכטר עם כישורי שפה מועטים או כלל לא. תלמידים מתאימים, יקבלו מענה לצרכיהם הלשוניים בשפה האנגלית, תמיכה עקבית ואת כל התנאים הדרושים להם, על מנת שיוכלו להשתלב בתוכן האקדמי ולקיים אינטראקציה באנגלית כמה שיותר מהר. התלמידים יפגשו לשיעורי התמיכה בנפרד או בקבוצות קטנות, מספר פעמים בכל שבוע עם חבר/ת הצוות שלנו ב– ELL.
התוכנית שלנו להוראת השפה העברית מזמנת הרבה יותר מרק שליטה בשפה. התוכנית מאחדת תרבות, היסטוריה ומסורת. המורים לעברית בבית הספר הם ישראלים וישראליות, המשתמשים בחומרים אותנטיים של מיטב היצירה העכשווית והקלאסיקה הספרותית והתרבותית עליה כולנו גדלנו. סיפורים, שירים, משחקים, כולם יוצרים סביבת- תוכן הבונה לא רק כישורי שפה, אלא זהות תרבותית, שייכות ואהבת ישראל.
החיים היהודיים בשכטר הם הוליסטיים ורוחניים. הפילוסופיה שלנו היא לחשוף את תלמידינו לעושר התפילה, החגים והטקסים, אך לא לכפות אמונות. כל תלמיד מוצא את ה- “אני מאמין” או “אני מאמינה” שלו ושלה באמצעות חקירה ולימוד בקהילה המגוונת והמכילה שלנו.
תהליכי ההוראה והלמידה מתמקדים במיומנויות השונות בכל תחומי הדעת, וכן בלימודי יהדות ובלימודים הכלליים (אנגלית, היסטוריה, מתמטיקה ועוד). אנו מכינים את התלמידים להתמודד עם מורכבויות, דילמות, שאילת שאלות, סקרנות, ושואפים למצוא רלוונטיות אישית במה שהם לומדים. אנו מפתחים אצל התלמידים הלך רוח שהוא חיוני לחיים מאושרים של קשר ותרומה לקהילה.
בסופו של דבר, בין אם אתה שמאל, ימין, אשכנזי, ספרדי, דתי או חילוני, בין אם אתה מסכים או לא מסכים, כל ישראל אחים. להיות בשכטר פירושו להיות חלק מהמשפחה ומהעם שלנו.
